Our class will be walking to downtown Crystal Lake for a math field trip. Over the next few weeks, we will be focusing on applying percents, specifically, tax, tip and discount. In order to apply that outside of the classroom, we will be walking to the Olympic Cafe for breakfast. Students will order what they wish, pay for their meal all while calculating local taxes and adding a tip for the server.
In February, our math unit involved ratios, rates, and proportions. Students practiced finding “the better buy”. Our class offered a hot drink order to all the staff at Hannah Beardsley. The cost of the drink depended on which drink it was. Students calculated unit rates, and what would be a good price to charge for each drink. In return, students collected enough money to cover their breakfast at the Olympic Cafe.
