In chapter 27, Brewster says: Who believe Ozzy when he calls me a clumsy waste of life, all eyes turning in my direction as if I’m the one to blame, and I know I’m beaten because as much as I want to expel my fury right in his face, as much as I want to play whack-a-mole on his hairless head, I can’t, and wouldn’t they all laugh from here to the edge of their miserable universe if they knew that the boy most likely to fry was incapable of lifting a finger to hurt anyone, even if the hurt was earned. When Brewster mentions that he is “incapable of lifting a finger to hurt anyone, even if the hurt was earned,” why do you believe that is the case? In a paragraph, why do you think Brewster couldn’t hurt anyone? Use text evidence and analysis to defend your response.

Prompt: 

In chapter 33, Quietus, Tennyson was quoted saying: What I felt was this: an unexpected quietus of everything bad I was feeling. An extinguishing of all my anger and frustration. The numbing came just as I told off Brewster. Once I vented at him, I couldn’t hold on to my rage. By the time I had stormed back to the team, I was feeling okay about everything. But feeling “okay” was absolutely wrong—it felt like another level of fraud on my part.

I saw him hurrying away then. Hurrying away in fury. Was he angry at me for being angry at him? Maybe. Or maybe it was more than that.

That’s the real reason why I don’t want to face Brewster quite yet. Because I’m not sure whether it’s just me being weird…or if that undertow is the first hint of a much more powerful riptide.

In a paragraph, using text evidence and your thinking, what might this be foreshadowing in the story? What might this section mean to the development of the story?

In Chapter 36, we learned of how deep Brewster’s ability is. 

He (Cody) nods and begins to cry,

But it only lasts an instant,

Because before a single tear falls

His sorrow becomes mine,

A heaviness in my heart,

A salty sting in my eyes.

“I want to be sad,” he says. “Can’t you let me feel sad?”

But I can’t do that.

I’m not wired that way.

Besides taking the physical pain, what else can Brewster do? Where else in the story do we have evidence of these abilities? Be specific with your text evidence and your thinking.
