District 47 Recognized for PBIS Implementation

In September, District 47 elementary and middle schools were recognized by the Midwest PBIS Network for their work in 2021-22 toward implementing a framework that leads to improved student outcomes. 

District 47 began implementing Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) in 2014 to build a school- and district-wide framework aimed at closing achievement gaps. District 47 utilizes PBIS as well as a framework called Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to fulfill the district’s mission of Empowering All Students. National research shows that full implementation of such frameworks leads to improved student outcomes related to academic performance and social-emotional competence. 

PBIS and MTSS work in tandem to: 

  • increase the consistency of effective instruction for all students;

  • build staff knowledge and skills to support all learners;

  • use data to more quickly identify and provide support for students; and 

  • create a culture that supports strong relationships with students, families, and communities

District, school, and grade-level leadership teams meet regularly to review student academic and behavior data to identify areas of strength, weakness and growth to provide targeted interventions, enrichment and support for student success. This data-based approach drives district priorities and shapes district and school improvement plans that align to the district’s overall strategic plan.  

“District 47 is committed to the adoption of evidence-based practices that help our students succeed,” notes Dr. Kathy Hinz, superintendent. “Through PBIS, we can meet the needs of all students by simultaneously modeling and rewarding positive behavior and providing support and interventions where needed.”
