Free Summer Lunch Program for Crystal Lake Youth

For the fourth year in a row, Crystal Lake youth 18 years and younger are invited to enjoy a free lunch this summer.

Sponsored by the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the summer lunch program provides free boxed lunches to any child in Crystal Lake 18 years of age and younger. The program is led by volunteers and supported by various organizations, including the Crystal Lake Park District, Vineyard Church, the Crystal Lake Public Library and the Sage YMCA.

The lunch program will be offered on weekdays* starting Thursday, June 6, 2019 and ending Friday, August 16, 2019. Lunch will be served from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm at Ladd Park, 556 Devonshire Lane in Crystal Lake. In case of rain, lunches will be served at Vineyard Church, 7105 Virginia Road in Crystal Lake (next to the CVS). No registration is required.

Last summer, the free lunch program in Crystal Lake served approximately 2,200 meals and fed approximately 40 children per day. The program aims to fill a void in the summer months when school is not in session and lunch is not provided to qualifying children through the National School Lunch Program.

Northern Illinois Food Bank’s Summer Meal Program is offered in partnership with the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program and is administered by the Illinois State Board of Education. According to its website, last year alone, the program served more than 245,000 summer meals to children in need by working with more than 130 summer youth programs at parks, churches, schools, and other sites throughout the community.
