At the February 19, 2019 District 47 Board of Education meeting, the Board approved a motion for the District to purchase designated school supply items for the 2019-2020 school year to help offset the cost of school supplies for parents.
The idea to subsidize the cost of school supplies came about as District 47 was granted additional funding from the state this year through the new Illinois education funding formula. The formula is based on a school’s adequacy target, which pertains to the cost of educating students, and factors in a community’s ability to financially support its schools. Through competitive bid pricing and bulk discounts, the District plans to purchase some of the more popular school supply items across all grade levels. While specific items have not yet been determined, supplies under consideration are glue sticks, scissors, tissues, crayons, colored pencils, pencils, markers, pens, erasers, and plastic storage bags.
“We are grateful to our parents and the community for supporting our schools,” said Superintendent Dr. Kathy Hinz. “This year we have an opportunity to give back to our parents by reducing the cost of school supplies and we feel good about that.”
District 47 school supply lists for the 2019-20 school year will be finalized in May. Over the summer, supply lists can be found on all school websites and on the D47 mobile app. Lists will also be available at local retailers.
