District 47 Schools Earn PBIS Recognition

PBIS recognition

Out of more than 400 participating Illinois schools, 11 District 47 schools were recognized by the Midwest PBIS Network for outstanding implementation of Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) for the 2018-19 school year. PBIS is a tiered, school-wide system of behavioral support strategies for defining, teaching and supporting appropriate student behaviors to create positive school environments.

By submitting an online application and data supporting PBIS implementation efforts and outcomes, schools are considered for recognition at one of four levels -- bronze, silver, gold or platinum. For the 2018-19 school year:

  • Seven D47 schools were awarded gold status: Coventry Elementary School, Indian Prairie Elementary School, North Elementary School, South Elementary School, Woods Creek Elementary School, Lundahl Middle School, and Bernotas Middle School
  • Three D47 schools were awarded silver status: Canterbury Elementary School, Husmann Elementary School, and West Elementary School
  • One D47 school was awarded bronze status: Hannah Beardsley Middle School

District 47 introduced PBIS during the 2014-15 school year and schools have worked diligently to expand the program each year. Administrators and staff members work together to consistently teach, model, reteach, and reinforce school behavior expectations. The expectations -- Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe -- are taught across all settings in the school from classrooms and the cafeteria to hallways, the playground and even the bus.

“We are proud of our schools for their commitment to the PBIS program,” said Superintendent Dr. Kathy Hinz. “Through a clear and consistent framework for student behavior, we are able to fulfill our mission of empowering all students. PBIS provides effective supports for all students to achieve social, emotional, behavioral, and academic success.”

District 47 schools are prominently featured among other recognized schools on the Midwest PBIS Network website and are listed among recognized schools in the state of Illinois. For more information about PBIS, visit
