South Senators- The South Senators are a group of students from grades 1-5 who work together on a variety of community events throughout the school year that promote good character traits such as citizenship, responsibility, caring and respect.
Safety Patrol- A club that provides 5th graders interested in keeping the school safe with just that opportunity. Student jobs include: raising/lowering the flag, playground support in the morning and during dismissal in bus lines and helping primary students enter/leave the building during arrival/dismissal.
Wee Deliver- Wee Deliver provides students with the opportunity to develop and practice proper letter writing skills. Students enjoy writing to and receiving letters from their friends and favorite faculty members. Our third grade classrooms rotate the postal service responsibilities each trimester.
Recycling Club- 5th grade volunteers at South are responsible twice a week for collecting and sorting recycling materials from blue bins throughout the school. Custodians add typical materials to the recycling dumpster while more specialty items, like used markers, electronics and Styrofoam, are taken to available community collection sites. Mrs. Jensen, the club's advisor, also holds group meetings where students participate in special, fun, educational outreach projects such as creating the bottle cap Van Gogh art piece and video.
Band- All 5th grade students are able to participate in band. In the spring of their 4th grade year, students have the opportunity to try out instruments to find what suits them. In the fall, full band meets one morning a week and one time a week during the school day to practice. There are several band performances throughout the school year. Chorus- Chorus is an elective that welcomes all 4th and 5th graders to join! This elective starts in February and runs until the end of May. In Chorus, students will learn the art of singing in an ensemble, be exposed to a variety of repertoire, and practice vocal techniques/ exercises to strengthen their singing voices. The students will have two performances: a Spring Concert during Academic Night, and a song in South Elementary's Yellow Ribbon Ceremony.
STEM - a club for 5th grader students is here at South. The first Wednesday of each month, 5th grade students will have a chance to stay after school from 3:30-4:30 to work on various challenges with Mr. Ludwig ( STEM teacher) and to help support our building STEM program. Students will pick up a permission slip on the Friday prior to the Wednesday start date. They must have it returned the following Monday at 3pm to have an opportunity to participate. If more then 15 permission slips are returned then a drawing will take place to determine who will be coming each time. Please contract Mr. Ludwig (email@example.com) with any questions.
Garden Club -a club for the 4th graders during the Fall and Spring to take care of our beautiful South garden. The students will work on watering, planting and pulling weeds. The meetings will be held during lunch time and possibly after school of certain days by Mrs. Jensen and Mrs. Bigos. Names will be pulled out of a hat to determine who gets to participate if alot of interest is received. Meeting times will vary and teachers will inform the students of days.
Movie Inspired Book Club - a club for 3rd graders will be held during lunch time on Mondays. The students will read and discuss the text and then watch the movie to compare and contrast the two versions of the story. This is on ongoing club and will rotate the book choices by reading level. The first book will be "Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.
Math Club - this club is for 5th graders. The club will focus on extending math skills and increas math knowledge ( specifically with operations and algebraic thinking). It will meet on Fridays during lunch and lunch recess ( 1:05-1:55pm). in the Art Room. This is an invite club only . See Mrs. Bigos for any questions.
