Wehde Early Childhood Center opened in the fall of 2001 as a permanent home for the district’s early childhood programs. The center is housed within Glacier Ridge Elementary and serves approximately 300 preschool students each year with the help of 65 qualified staff. Pam White serves as the center's director.
Wehde has two primary offerings targeted to preschool students: a special education program, which includes speech and language therapy and diagnostic/ screening services; and a blended preschool program, which serves the needs of both general education and special education students in a blended classroom setting.
Early childhood classes consist of morning and afternoon sessions. Morning classes serve 3-year-olds and meet from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday. Eligible students for AM session must turn 3 years old by September 1, 2017. Afternoon classes serve 4-year-olds and meet from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Eligible students for PM session must turn 4 years old by September 1, 2017.
Wehde's early childhood classrooms typically follow the District 47 school calendar and all Wehde events can be found on the district calendar. Parents are notified of any exceptions and special dates that arise during the school year. Bus service is available for all children enrolled in a Wehde early childhood program.
Wehde Early Childhood Center is a busy place! We are constantly striving to better meet the changing, diverse needs of our District's 3- and 4-year-old population.
A bit of history...
District 47 started its early childhood program in 1981 with two classrooms in the basement of South Elementary. At that time, Ron Kruis oversaw the classrooms as the coordinator of the program. After a couple of years, Jeaninne Linder took over the coordinator role as the program began to grow. In 1995, Jeaninne retired and the District hired Nancy McGuire as the administrator for the early childhood program. As the district continued to expand in the 1990s, the early childhood program also grew and expanded into the entire basement of South school. In the fall of 2001, the Carl Wehde early childhood program opened as a wing of Glacier Ridge Elementary school, where the program currently resides. The program currently consists of nine classrooms and a variety of related services to support children ages 3-5.
