We are going to space this week!  You know that I love SPACE!  We have not done this one yet in STEM.  You can give me feedback on it if you like it.

Draw or make a model moon/mars habitat(colony).  We are going back to the moon in 2024 to stay longer.  What would a moon colony look like?  If you want to build it, use small boxes, tubes, paper, recyclables and other materials/supplies that you have at home.  Foil and clear wrap might be a good material to use too.  Maybe you would use a white piece of paper under it to make it look like the surface of the moon or Mars.  Both places are very different but we have people planning to send astronauts to both of these faraway spots in space.  You can use Epic if you need more information on both the moon and Mars.  They also have some great videos in Epic if you would like to watch instead of read.

You may post on SeeSaw, Google Classroom with Flipgrid or email me at tawolf@d47.org with a photo or video of your moon/Mars colony habitat.  I can’t wait to see your designs!  Maybe one day that will be your job!

I am so excited!  You are doing an activity that I did at a summer camp last year.  It is supposed to be a nice week with lots of sun.  In your Google Classroom in your Flipgrid is a link to making a Solar Oven.  You can use different materials and box sizes.  I used all sorts of materials last summer that are not included on that list.  They can all work if you make sure you have tinfoil or something that can reflect the light into your solar oven.  Can you make a Smore?  You can melt the marshmallow in the solar oven.  Or can you melt an ice cube in it.  Be creative!  You can share with me in your Flipgrid and show me what it looks like.

If you don’t have available supplies, you can draw a model of what you would use from home to make it.  You can take a picture and share the image or draw it in Google Drawing.

This is such a fun family project!  Make sure there is sun when you try it.  You can try it a different day if it is cloudy on your STEM day.  You can email me at tawolf@d47.org with questions or final videos.

In 2nd grade, we made a cooler with a partner that had to keep an ice pop frozen for an hour.  What if we use an ice cube and we keep it in our cooler for 90 minutes?  What if we put it by a sunny window or outside?  It could be a very small cooler because it only has to hold an ice cube.  Maybe it is a cube shape with a cube inside!

You can post a picture of your cooler in our Google Classroom STEM or SeeSaw.  Or you can have your parents email it to me at tawolf@d47.org.  I can’t wait to see what you will create with the materials that you have at home.

    Dear West Parents/Guardians,

It is our intention to get over 500 students home safely after school each day. Therefore, we have specific guidelines in place to make safety a priority. It is important that we follow our Parent Pick Up procedures in front of the school. As a reminder, the RED bell rings at 3:27 p.m. and the YELLOW bell rings at 3:30 p.m. Therefore, our front parking lot is closed from 3:27 - 3:30 to vehicles that do not have a RED or YELLOW pass.

We have been experiencing parents parking in the angled parking spots before the RED bell. This is causing unsafe situations when parents and students are walking across to the parked vehicles. In addition, vehicles trying to pull out of the angled spots are causing a traffic jam as RED and YELLOW bell vehicles are double-parked along the curb.

If you do not have a Parent Pick Up pass, you may enter the front pick-up area at 3:35 p.m. We have certified staff supervising the students until all students are picked up. At this time, we are asking that you do not park in an angled spot, but instead, use the circle pick-up pattern as it was intended.

The City of Crystal Lake does not allow parking on Ballard Road.  If you are not able to pull into the parking lot, please circle around the block until you are able to pull in. We will keep your student(s) safe--there is no need to hurry or to worry about picking them up right away.

We realize there are situations throughout the week that may require you to pick up your student(s) from school; however, if they are assigned a bus, please consider having your student(s) ride the bus when they can.

We wanted to give you a heads up that we will be enforcing these guidelines. Beginning Monday, December 2nd,  we will be visible in the parking lot enforcing the correct passes entering the parking lot at the proper time.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Klinsky and Mrs. Cruz

    Giving Tree

During the holiday season, a Giving Tree has been placed in our school lobby, offering two special ways to help our community.  The Salvation Army Angel Tree Tags will be available to select a special gift to purchase for a child living in our community, one who might not otherwise receive a gift this holiday.  Unwrapped gifts are returned to school with the tag attached by Wednesday, December 18th.  Or, please consider selecting a gold star from the tree to purchase gift cards from local businesses to help provide to our West families as needed throughout the year - and not just at the holidays.  Thank you for helping to support West School’s Giving Tree this year, spreading joy and happiness this holiday season.  Thank you.

    Dear Parents,

Our Orange Ruler fundraising drive is off to a good start!  I want to thank those of you that have already gone to orangeruler.com/signup to register your child in our class, donate and also send donation invites to friends and family to help your child, our class and the school.  And on a personal note, it is refreshing to work with Orange Ruler as they offer a uniquely new style of team-based fundraiser and program that aligns directly with the positive themes we as teachers and you as parents are already promoting to the children – messages centered around encouraging teamwork, believing in yourself, thinking of others, being active, etc.

Our class is already having a fun time with the program and we are excited to work together as a team and school to help raise money for both the good of our class and school.  Each donation from your friends, your family and you will have the added benefit of not only increasing your child’s chances to win daily drawing prizes but also quickly multiplying the chances that our entire class will receive fun team and school-based rewards and memorable experiences (detailed within both the parent letter and the online system).

If we make our school goal of $25,000, Mrs. Klinsky and Mrs. Cruz will be dressing in Pig Costumes and competing against each other in a race. The whole school will watch and cheer them on! We are also in a friendly competition with Woods Creek School. Mrs. Klinsky and Mrs. Cruz will be wearing Woods Creek spirit wear for a day if we do not raise more than Woods Creek.  As of Thursday, Sept. 12th, Woods Creek is slightly ahead of us by $2,000.

This fundraiser helps support our school in so many ways. A few of the things that the money raised pays for are;  all student field trips, supplies the teachers need for classrooms, birthday books and Paw Pride Friday. Please consider participating to support our school.

Thank you again for your support with this important fundraiser and program, it is greatly appreciated.

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Meucci

    Dear Families,

This year we welcomed many students with severe food allergies to our classrooms. We invite your help and cooperation to help them stay safe.

We may have one or more students in the classroom who are allergic to peanuts and/or tree nuts, and a variety of other food allergies. Reactions range from mild to life-threatening. There are several practices that are in place to help prevent allergic reactions:

    1. Students are encouraged to wash their hands upon arrival in the morning, and again before and after lunch. 2. Students may not bring snacks containing peanuts or tree nuts, or manufactured in a plant that produces peanuts/tree nuts into the classroom. Students may bring fresh fruit, fresh vegetables or cheese. 3. There will be no projects in the classroom with peanut butter or peanut shells. 4. The parents who send homemade lunch with their children are free to pack the food of your choice for the lunchroom. 5. If your child has eaten nuts or peanut butter before coming to school, please be sure that their hands and face have been thoroughly washed and their teeth brushed. 6. Please remind your child to not share their lunch with their classmates. 7. There will be special days, such as birthdays, when students may want to bring a goodie bag to share with their classmates. It is district policy that no edible treats be sent in. Consider sending and/or donating a book or a game to the class, or a pencil or prize as an alternative. Parents will be informed of parties in advance so that they can help select an appropriate choice off the list of suggested food party items provided from the district food supplier. Goodie bags with food or candy will not be distributed to students.

We look forward to working with you to have a wonderful, healthy year. If you have any questions about this, please contact your school nurse.

    Sincerely,

    Health Services (2019)

    Dear New Fourth Grade Families,

It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again when we are getting ready for a new school year!  I hope that you had a great summer and enjoyed spending time with friends and family! We took a vacation to a lakehouse in Wisconsin. We enjoyed swimming in the lake and taking boat rides on a pontoon boat. We also enjoyed visiting our local pool, bike riding, and walking in our neighborhood. I had plenty of time to read several wonderful books. I would love to hear about the exciting books you read this summer! Please share your book recommendations with me.

I am looking forward to teaching Fourth Grade at West again this year, and I’m excited to have you in my class! Fourth grade is full of interesting activities and many new things to learn. We will be learning about rocks and minerals and electricity in science.  We will also be taking a virtual tour of many cities across the United States in Social Studies. I am thrilled to share some fantastic books with you!

Welcome to my class!  I can’t wait to meet you and your family at our annual Meet the Teacher on Tuesday, August 20, 2019. See you then!

    Sincerely,

    Mrs. Meucci
