Social Emotional Learning

In District 47, we prioritize Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) as an integral part of our educational approach. SEL skills are intentionally incorporated throughout our curriculum, empowering students to thrive academically and emotionally.

SEL

District 47 SEL curriculum is aligned with the goals outlined in the Illinois Learning Standards:

  • Develop self-awareness and self-management skills to achieve school and life success.
  • Use social-awareness and interpersonal skills to establish and maintain positive relationships.
  • Demonstrate decision-making skills and responsible behaviors in personal, school, and community contexts.

District 47 integrates the 5 social and emotional competencies of CASEL’s Framework into instruction, developing:

  • self-awareness
  • self-management
  • social awareness
  • relationship skills
  • responsible decision-making
Research shows that SEL is crucial for equipping students with the skills they need for long-term success in life. The district uses the Second Step Curriculum as well as Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) to ensure each student feels safe and ready to learn.

Encouraging Positive Behavior through PBIS

All District 47 schools have implemented a framework called PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports). Staff members consistently teach, model and reinforce appropriate and positive behavior for all students. PBIS teaches students to be responsible for their own behavior with the motto: Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.

District 47 has been recognized by the Midwest PBIS Network for PBIS implementation  and were the sole school district in Illinois selected by the Association for Positive Behavior Support (APBS) for a visit by international representatives. Delegates from Thailand, Japan, Canada and other states had the opportunity to tour schools to witness firsthand the remarkable ways our staff incorporates PBIS into the curriculum.

Preventative Measures & Mental Health

District 47 takes a proactive approach to social-emotional learning and mental health as we recognize that students are unable to engage in learning if they are stressed or experiencing other mental health issues. We have a variety of programs and board policies aimed at creating and maintaining a healthy and safe learning environment.
