District 47's Dual Language program is currently offered at Canterbury, Coventry, and North Elementary Schools and at Hannah Beardsley and Lundahl Middle Schools. The Dual Language Program is a parent-choice program and English-speaking students are only admitted at the kindergarten level. Due to its popularity, entry to the program is based on a lottery system. Upon applying and being accepted into the program, families are asked to commit their child to the program through 8th grade.
District 47's Dual Language Program integrates native English-speaking students with Spanish-speaking students for academic instruction, which is presented in both languages. Dual language classrooms (known as two-way immersion) in kindergarten through 5th grade have 50% of their literacy instruction in Spanish and English, including small group reading instruction. Math instruction is taught primarily in Spanish in kindergarten through 3rd grade and taught primarily in English in 4th and 5th grade. Classrooms are generally comprised of approximately one-third native English speakers and two-thirds native Spanish speakers or emerging bilinguals in order for a unique balance of languages to be met.
