Student Voices Drive Math Learning at Indian Prairie

Fourth grade students in Jaime Ziegler’s classroom at Indian Prairie are proving that math is more than just finding the right answer; it’s about thinking, explaining, and learning together.

During a recent math block, students worked independently in small groups, engaging in rich conversations as they tackled the same problem using various strategies. Around the room, students confidently explained their thinking, compared approaches, and learned from one another. From ratio tables and area models to base ten pieces and the “Great Wall of Base Ten” displayed in the classroom, each group chose the method that made the most sense to them.

One standout moment came when a student enthusiastically shared, “I love ratio tables,” perfectly capturing the excitement and ownership students are developing in their learning.

Mrs. Ziegler’s classroom reflects a learning environment where student discourse is encouraged, and multiple pathways to problem-solving are celebrated. By fostering discussion and honoring different approaches, students build a deeper understanding, confidence, and genuine appreciation for math.
