South Student’s Big Heart Warms the Community

South Student’s Big Heart Warms the Community

While riding a train to Chicago with his grandmother, South Elementary fourth-grade student Aaden saw people experiencing homelessness on a cold overpass, he felt compelled to help. He and his parents brainstormed ideas, and that’s how the idea for a schoolwide blanket drive was born.

Aaden took his idea one step further by scheduling a meeting with Principal Alt to pitch his plan for a schoolwide blanket drive. After sharing why the cause mattered to him and how South could get involved, he received the green light to move forward.

“At South, Aiden is always thinking of others,” Principal Rachael Alt said. “The whole South community wraps in examples and recognizes acts of kindness and caring throughout our building each day. It is so wonderful that a student took this focus of helping others, outside of our school and into the Crystal Lake community!”

At the end of February, Aaden organized the blanket drive, collecting donations in the school’s front entryway. Thanks to the generosity of families and staff, he gathered 20 blankets to support individuals in need. Aaden and his family plan to personally deliver the blankets to local charities, ensuring they reach those who need warmth and comfort most.

Inspired by Aaden’s initiative, the PTO expanded the project by donating materials so fourth-grade students could make blankets together. The hands-on experience allowed students to contribute directly while learning about empathy, service, and community care.

Aaden’s thoughtful leadership is a reminder that one small idea can spark something much bigger. Through his efforts, South students not only collected blankets but also helped wrap the community in kindness.
