New Canterbury Principal Announcement
We are pleased to announce that Ryan Schaefer will be the new principal of Canterbury Elementary School starting in the 2025-2026 school year, pending board approval at the July board meeting.
Ryan has 20 years of experience in education, beginning his career as an elementary school teacher. He went on to teach sixth grade literacy, work as an instructional coach, and serve as an adjunct instructor at the university level. For the past four years, Ryan has served in District 47 as assistant principal at Coventry Elementary and, for the past two years, as summer school principal at Glacier Ridge.
Working at Coventry, a Title 1 school with a dual language program, has provided Ryan with valuable experience in working collaboratively to support diverse learning needs and create an inclusive school environment.
"Ryan is a proven leader who prioritizes strong connections with students, staff, and families," said Dr. Kathy J. Hinz, superintendent. His experience at Coventry and as a summer school principal has shown his ability to foster a supportive, inclusive school community where all learners can thrive. I am excited to see her lead Canterbury and continue making a difference in the lives of District 47 students."
“I am honored to serve as the next principal of Canterbury Elementary School,” said Dr. Schaefer. “Since entering education, it has been my dream to one day be a school principal. Canterbury has a proud tradition and a strong sense of community, and I am excited to partner with staff, families, and students to create a supportive and enriching school experience for every child.”
Mr. Schaefer completed his undergraduate studies at Elmhurst University and earned two master’s degrees: one in leadership and administration from North Central College and another in education and literacy from Judson University. She later completed her doctorate in literacy at Judson University.
