District 47 Announces New Early Intervention Program
District 47 is excited to announce a new after-school program for 1st and 2nd grade students at Canterbury Elementary, funded by a generous Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) grant.
The after-school program is designed to provide specialized assistance to 1st and 2nd grade students during their crucial early years of development. This initiative, led by Canterbury Principal Stacy Graff, will offer support for students in literacy, math, and social-emotional learning (SEL). This program will run February 5, 2024 through May, from 3:45 p.m. - 5:15 p.m. with transportation provided.
"This grant funded program aims to provide extra support for Canterbury students selected based on assessment and classroom data,” said Aimee Kasper, Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. “Early intervention has a significant impact on a child’s development. With small class sizes and targeted instruction we hope to create an environment in which students can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally."
During the critical early years, specialized support can help students achieve their full potential, address social and emotional challenges, build stronger connections, and foster independence and self-confidence. Identifying and addressing difficulties early on also prevents more significant challenges in the long run.
The decision to place the program at Canterbury was based on assessment data over several years. After the implementation is completed in one location and data is collected, District 47 will assess the potential for extending the program to include students in other schools within the district.
