Boundary Updates

District 47 has initiated a comprehensive review of our school district boundaries, beginning with our three middle schools. This review will involve analyzing current enrollment data, population trends (including several new developments in the area), geographic considerations, and other relevant factors to determine if adjustments to our boundaries are necessary.

The district will be using a boundary committee comprised of board members, administration, staff, parents/guardians, and community members to review and recommend boundary changes in two phases, with phase 1 focusing on middle schools. Pending board approval, phase 1 boundary adjustments are anticipated to be implemented for the 2025-2026 school year. Phase 2 will follow, focusing on elementary school boundaries.

August 8, 2024

A Middle School Boundary Feedback Survey was sent to District 47 families, shared on social media, and included in the annual report mailed to every home in District 47 boundaries. Results will be shared with committee members at the September 9 boundary committee meeting to assist with a proposal for the board.

May 14, 2024

The district created a Boundary Update page on the website that includes a timeline of the review process, history of boundary changes, goals and priorities, and ongoing communications to the community.

"The District 47 Boundaries page will be routinely updated when there is information to share. The boundary committee has met twice - April 8 and May 13. During that time, the boundary committee reviewed existing data, identified challenges, and discussed feedback needed from the community. The district plans to share a survey or feedback opportunity just before the start of the 2024-2025 school year."

March 1, 2024

Dr. Kathy J. Hinz, Superintendent of District 47, sent an email to staff and families, announcing the commencement of a boundary review process. The communication includes information on how to apply to become a member of the boundary review committee.

Goals & Priorities

Goals & Priorities of Boundary Review

Establish contiguous boundaries, utilizing natural divisions between neighborhoods as attendance lines
Prioritize reducing time spent on buses for students, promoting walking routes to school where feasible, to minimize transportation costs
Take demographic considerations into account to ensure student academic, social, and mental health needs are met at each school, including considerations of educational programming
Plan boundaries with longevity in mind, anticipating possible changes in the future to remain stable for as long as possible, minimizing the need for major construction projects and associated fiscal costs
Facilitate a cohesive K-12 experience by ensuring as many schools as possible have students progress from one grade level to the next, maximizing student connectivity with their peers, while also considering staffing considerations such as staff movement or changes that may impact fiscal budgets

History of Boundary Adjustments

1991 - Indian Prairie opened
- Adjustments were made to all elementary boundaries
1996 - HBMS opened
- Adjustments were made to middle school boundaries
- Adjustments were determined for 1997/98 elem boundaries in anticipation of Woods Creek opening in August 1997
2001 - Glacier Ridge opened
- Adjustments were made to elementary boundaries
2003/04 - South End Elem Boundaries
- Ackman Rd on the north, Swanson Rd on the east, and Lakewood on the west from West to Woods Creek
- Randall on the east, Miller Rd on the north, and Harvest Gate on the west (1165 - 1187) from Glacier Ridge to Indian Prairie
2004/05 - RBMS boundaries (Country Club Rd)
- Southwest side of Country Club Rd from HBMS to RBMS
2005/06 - New Subdivision Property Boundaries
- “Terra Cotta” property moved from North to Coventry boundaries
- Oak Grove Subdivision (Units I, II, & III) moved from North to Husmann boundaries
2007/08 - North/Husmann/South Boundary shift
- Walk-Up at the Park - shifted from North to Husmann
- Crystal Lake Ave, Dole Ave, Route 14 Triangle - North of CL Ave attend North; South of CL Ave attend Husmann
- Green Oaks Dr and Sycamore Dr moved from North to South
2009/10 - Middle School Boundary Shifts
- Area south of Miller Rd from RBMS to LMS
- Area south of Berkshire from HBMS to LMS
- Area south of McHenry from HBMS to LMS
2010/11- Bus/Walker Boundary changes (IP & HBMS)
- Due to new sidewalks and completed extensions that did not previously exist, identified hazards no longer existed and transportation was discontinued for a portion of Indian Prairie and HBMS
2013/14 - Canterbury/Coventry/Indian Prairie
- Virginia Road Apartments shifted from Canterbury to Coventry
- “Presidential” subdivision (east of Randall off of Miller) shifted from Canterbury to Indian Prairie
- Northwest Hwy/Teckler/Virginia Road Triangle shifted from Canterbury to Coventry
