Welcome to Kindergarten
In District 47, we believe that kindergarten should be a cooperative partnership involving the child, parent, teacher and other staff members. The foundation for a successful education is formed in kindergarten and we recognize that each child enters with unique experiences. District 47’s kindergarten curriculum is designed to support the academic, social-emotional, and physical growth of each student. The instructional program is activity and language-oriented, providing a safe and nurturing environment intended to motivate each child to use skills when developmentally, academically and socially appropriate.
Full-Day and Half-Day Kindergarten
Although the vast majority of students participate in full day kindergarten, half day kindergarten is offered as an option in limited capacity. Subjects include language arts (reading, writing, and speaking/listening), math, science, social studies, handwriting and Purposeful Play. Full-day kindergarten classrooms provide additional opportunities for practice in these areas. Encore subjects, such as P.E., art, music, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), are part of the full-day kindergarten experience. Students enrolled in half-day kindergarten may miss out on some of the Encore subjects due to conflicts and limitations associated with schedules. Other factors for students enrolled in half-day kindergarten include, but may not be limited to participation in the morning sessions.
