We will be using the Traits Writing Curriculum by Scholastic during the writing time in our kindergarten classroom. Throughout the writing instruction, the students learn how to incorporate the traits into their own writing. The traits include ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, conventions, and presentation. During writing instruction, the students will be involved in modeled writing, shared writing, and independent writing. We will spend the beginning lessons discussing what writers do, the tools writers use, and where writers get their ideas. Throughout the school year, the students will have the opportunity to watch modeled writing lessons, write together on the anchor chart, and write their own pieces.
The students will also participate in book making throughout the school year. Book making is an opportunity for the students to use creativity and choice as they make books about their interests and ideas. The kindergarteners will be learning about the writing process through book making as they draft their books, change something about their piece, and make sure their sentences start with capitals and end with punctuation. They will also have the opportunity to share their finished books with their classmates.
