We will be using the Units of Study reading curriculum written by a district committee during our English/Language Arts time in our classroom. The Units of Study focus on a balanced literacy approach including shared reading, guided reading, independent reading, and read aloud.
During our literacy time, the students will be engaged in a variety of kindergarten level texts. Our first unit focuses on introducing the kindergarteners to literacy through texts and tasks about showing respect and responsibility in the school community. They will learn about perseverance, teamwork, and cooperation through books and discussions. Our second unit is focused on what makes ourselves and others unique in our classroom community. During the third unit, we will be focusing on the seasons and the unique changes during fall, summer, winter, and spring.
In addition to whole class stories and discussions, the kindergarteners will also participate in guided reading (small reading groups) and literacy stations. During guided reading, the students will be participating in small group reading instruction with the classroom teacher and a few other students. The students will independently participate in literacy stations in order to practice reading and writing skills that they have been learning in the classroom. We will begin the year by learning about each literacy station as a whole class and having the students practice the literacy station together.
