    Important

    Bingo Baskets

    Fourth grade is collecting beach and pool things, gift cards, and hair accessories for the bingo baskets to be raffled at BINGO night. We appreciate your help! Bingo Night is March 6th. 

     

    The Kids Heart Challenge is currently taking place during your child's P.E. class! For many years Coventry has supported the American Heart Association through the Kids Heart Challenge. All students are participating in the jumping activities but raising funds is voluntary. Please consider making a donation to this heart healthy cause by clicking on the link. Join our school and help us support the cause!

     Math

    What a busy week. We learned about symmetry, and how many lines of symmetry a shape may have. We worked on finding out the rectangles area and perimeter.  We learned our formula for area is A=L x W and Perimeter P=L+L+W+W. 

     

    Language Arts

    This week we started writing a tall tale. Tall tales have many hyperboles and the kids are working on generating these for their main character.  We have some creative writers.

     

    Science

    This week our investigation looked at lighting a light bulb, a motor and using an on/off switch. The kids are becoming familiar with electrical components. 

     

    Social Studies

    Next week we will be continuing our tour of the United States regions. We will be looking at the Midwest Region.

    Yesterday Tobias visited our classroom. The kids were able to pet him while we learned about his job.

    Your child is welcome to pass out Valentine’s on February 14th. Please make sure they include everyone in the class. I sent home a class list earlier in the week.

    Math

    This week we started learning about quadrilaterals. We learned how to classify them by parallel sides and right angles. 

     

    Language Arts

    Your child read the myth, Hercules’ Quest. The class is studying story elements for fables, folktales, myths, fairy tales, and tall tales. The students are enjoying learning about traditional literature. Students also started rewriting a fable using the program, Book Creator on the chromebooks using the story’s plot line as a guide. 

     

    Science

    Students completed an investigation on how to light a light bulb. We are learning many new terms such as electrical components, filament, and D-Cell battery.

    Winter 2020 Parent University - Parenting and Technology: Why Our Kids Are Growing Up Differently

    The Winter 2020 D47 Parent University event will be held Tuesday, February 4, 2020 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Lundahl Middle School, 560 Nash Rd. in Crystal Lake. Prairie Ridge High School counselor Missy Berg will discuss how technology and parenting strategies are affecting our kids' generation, known as Generation Z or iGen. Parents will learn how to help their children develop healthy peer and adult relationships, improve communication, cope and manage emotions, and increase self-efficacy/confidence.     Purrfect Cat Rescue

    Coventry Student Council is doing a community drive for the Purrfect Cat Rescue Shelter. Student Council is collecting basic household supplies like paper towels, disinfectant wipes, hand soap, hand sanitizer, garbage bags, dryer sheets, and more. The drive runs from January 21st through February 7th. Thank you for your support!

    Writing and reading poems with hot chocolate was fun today. I sent the packet home, so please encourage your child to read their poems to you.

    This week we learned the terms isosceles, scalene, and equilateral. Your child can classify triangles by their sides and angles.

    Class Materials

    Now is a good time to make sure that your child has their supplies. Please check to make sure your child has each day their headphones, assignment notebook, and home folder. We will continue to have reading and math homework throughout the year Monday-Thursday.

    100th Day of School

    With no emergency days between now and then: Monday, February 3rd, 2020 will be the 100th day.  Feel free to join in on this fun day and dress up.  

     

    The Great Kindness Challenge

    The Great Kindness Challenge starts next week! We will have spirit days and a coins for kindness collection. Students will vote on the charity for the coins next week. Please look in your child’s home folder for a flyer on these events.

    Well, this week we have learned how to use a protractor.

    We have been naming angles and now measuring them. We will continue to work on geometry for the next few weeks. Remember, we jumped to unit 8. You will find your child’s homework packet in their home folder. 

     

    Language Arts

    The class started studying traditional literature. We read a folktale about a dove and ant. Next, we plotted the story line on a graphic organizer. 

     

    Science

    Students had fun exploring magnets this week. We found out magnets stick to iron.

    Teacher Message

    Happy New Year! It’s wonderful to see the students refreshed and healthy after the break and ready to learn. We are diving into many learning activities. I told the class that next week we will be setting reading goals as a challenge to read more genres in the new year. Also, please check in with your child to make sure they are keeping up with their homework assignments. Thanks for your support:)

     

    We also finished the last MAP test. Next week your child will begin the FastBridge assessments. 

     

    Math

    The class just finished our unit on Algebra. We are going to review double-digit multiplication and long-division next week. After that, we will be starting a new journal for the next trimester learning geometry.  We will skip to unit 8. 


     Language Arts

    The class finished publishing their Time For Kids nomination. These opinion essays will be hanging up in the classroom. 

     

    Science 

    We are learning about magnets and how they attract and repel. The class explored what magnets stick to. We read a folktale about Magnus and the magnetic black rock. It could be how magnetism was first discovered by finding magnetite.

    We will be finishing our Unit 4 after the holidays we will finish the lessons and review for the test.

    Language Art

    Time for Kids Magazine does a campaign for children to nominate a person of the year. We have adapted it to our unit of study and are writing who we think could be person of the year. We have learned about Martin L King Jr., Nelson  Mandela, Rosa Parks, Cesar Chavez, and Harrett Tubman, 

    Social Studies

    We completed the Southeast region and the class did great on the states and capitals test. Congrats!

    Teacher Message

    We will have a holiday party on Friday, December 20th. Your child is welcome to bring in an extra snack for our afternoon celebration. As you know, we can't share food at school due to allergies. Thanks for your help with this. It should be a great winter celebration with games, crafts, and music. 

    Math

    We continue to work on chapter 4. This chapter focuses on order of operations and solving two step story problems.  We have discussed the comparison problems, how to write a solution equation and a situation equation. We are requiring students to write an equation with a variable and the answer with a unit.

    Language Arts

    We have been reading biographies and we recently read about Cesar Chavez. He was a great leader and helped to make farm working conditions better for migrant workers. Students used text evidence to write a pros constructed response. 

    Social Studies

    This week we have been studying for our social studies test. We also have been playing a geography game on the southeast.

    Language Arts

    This week we read a story called, My Brother Martin. This story is a biography written by Martin Luther King Jr.’s sister. We are focusing on what it takes to be a great leader. We also studied poems by Langston Hughes. We wrote a PCR (pros constructed response) and the students scored themselves based on their response using text evidence. 

     

    Math

    Science

    The class made crystals by completing an evaporation test. The class found out that the mock rocks had kosher salt in them.

    Teachers Notes

    Our field trip today was fantastic. The play was outstanding.

     

    Conferences

    As a reminder, Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in coming up fast.  I am excited to share your student's progress thus far, as well as the goals they have for continued progress.  (Remember we want your student present at conferences to share their achievements and goals.) 

     

    This year's conferences will be held:  Wednesday, November 20th  at 5:00pm-8:00pm, Monday, November 25th   at 12:00pm-8:00pm, and Tuesday, November 26th at  8:00am-11:00am

      

    Please contact your teacher or the main office if you have any questions or concerns.

    Math

    We have jumped in to long division, we are catching on. The children are working hard and understanding the process. Remember the multiplication facts are very important, Keep practicing your facts.

     

    Language Arts

    We continue to work on our narrative writing. We’re using the plot line to focus on the rising action, climax, and resolution. Your child will be typing the story on a Google Doc and then will piece it together in a small bound book. These should be wonderful to read. 

     

    Science

    We have made many observations on our mock rock.  What is your rock made of????? This week we worked on dissecting the mock rock.
