Assistive technology is any tool that can be purchased, modified, or created that helps a student to access their education. Assistive technology is available in any setting and academic area of study, including reading, math, studying, organization, executive functioning, writing, notetaking, communication, computer access, access to materials, and aids for daily living. AT tools range from a simple, low-tech device (such as a pencil grip), to a complex, high-tech device (such as a dynamic display communication system).

Any student may benefit from AT. While all students with an IEP, 504, or RTI plan are evaluated every year to determine their need for AT, all tools are accessible for any student.  

If it is determined that a student might need assistive technology, parents are notified and the AT consultation process begins. 

D47 uses the SETT Model (Student, Environment, Tasks, Tools) to guide the assistive technology process. SETT looks at a students' strengths and weakness, the environment they are in, and the tasks that they are required to complete. After gathering all of that information, required assistive technology features are determined and an appropriate tool is selected and trialed.

If it is determined that a student requires assistive technology to aid with homework at home, then the AT tools can go home with the student after the parents sign the District's loan agreement form.

If your child's team has recommended that your child uses Assistive Technology, it will be documented in your child's IEP or 504 plan. If you have any questions regarding your child's assistive technology needs, contact your child's case manager.
