Mrs. Marcia Hyma - Principal
Mrs. Christine Collins - Assistant Principal
As we quickly approach the end of this school year, we just have to celebrate the exemplary year that this has been. We are so proud of all of our West students also have held true to their Student Commitments, our 4R's:Respect, Role Model, Responsibility, and Effort. They have been honored through our weekly Principal Pride Certificates, as well as our Paw Pride Awards and WEST KIDS links.
This summer will be a time for major renovations throughout the majority of our school. We are so excited to spruce up West School and will be thrilled to show it off when school begins again. Unfortunately due to the remodeling, we will not be able to host Summer Library Nights nor our Jump Start/Summer Adventure's Camp. It will be even more vital that you keep your children reading throughout the entire summer. Make it a priority to set aside time for your children to read on a daily basis to prevent summer loss. It's especially fun to pick a wonderful book and have a family read aloud throughout the summer! We will be having a Read-a-thon in May to kick off summer reading, as well as a book swap! Let's work "Hand In Hand" to promote reading!
We wish you and your family a very fun, relaxing family-oriented summer! We'll see you in August!
The last day to buy a 20-day lunch ticket is May 2nd. the last day to buy a 10-day ticket is May 20th. there will be NO REFUNDS for unused tickets. Please make sure all charges are paid by June 1st.
SAVE THE DATE!
"Meet the Teacher" Day Monday, August 27th 2:30 to 3:15 pm. Meet the teacher, drop off supplies and see the classroom. Look for more information to be sent home over the summer.
Summer Remodel Project
The summer of 2012 will be a summer of major renovations for West School. You will be noticing white moving boxes throughout the school as many of our teachers begin packing up their rooms. the renovations will affect Rooms 1 - 16 and Room 18. On our last day of school, Tuesday, June 5th, those teachers will need to vacate their rooms at noon sharp. At that time, a moving company will come in to completely empty the classrooms, and the work will begin.
We are thrilled with improvements that will be taking place from June 5th through August 17th! the remodeling will include: new drop ceilings, state of the art lighting, new uni-vents, carpeting and hard floors in the classrooms and hallways, beautiful cupboards and counter-tops in classrooms, a new roof, a state of the art computer lab, an updated office and MORE! How exciting for West!
On Monday, August 27th we will hold our Meet the Teacher Day when you will be able to not only visit your child's classroom, but you will also be able to witness the Grand Viewing of our beautiful school. We'll see you then!
Students are encouraged to read each day and everyday! ReadwriteThink.org is a website designed to help children and teens continue to build their literacy. The site is filled with fun activities for children ages 4 to18.
Pick up Passes Expire
Pick up passes will expire at the end of this school year and will NOT be effective for the 2012 - 2013 school year. New passes will be reissued at West School on Tuesday, August 14th. Once again, passes will be given out on a first-come, first-serve basis to those families who will pick up their children in a vehicle every day of the week or on specific, consistent days throughout the week. You will be receiving information during the summer with the necessary form that is to be completed and dropped off on August 14th. Thank you for your cooperation.
RAZ Kids
RAZ-Kids West Elementary School was able to obtain a subscription to RAZ-Kids online for the students to use at school, at home or from any computer with internet access. The program is designed to allow students to read at their individual reading ability and provides feedback to their teacher through the use of online quizzes and assignment progress tools. We're excited that this wonderful resource is open for students to use all summer long to support their reading success! Please encourage your kids log-on to RAZ Kids and check it out! http://www.raz-kids.com/main/Login
New District 47 Birthday Treat Policy
In order to promote and foster healthier student choices and to a be mindful of the many students in District 47 with severe food allergies, we respectfully request that parents provide only non-food items when celebrating birthdays (book donations, pencils, stickers, etc.). Additionally, parents are strongly encouraged to provide healthy food choices for classroom celebrations and holiday parties.
This request will be effective as of January 4, 2012. We thank you for your full cooperation with this new district policy
Springtime Safety Tips
As the weather improves, we traditionally see more children walking or riding their bikes to school each day. We would like to take this opportunity to review a few simple safety rules for all children.
* It's great to travel to school with friends - go to and from school with a group.
* Remember to only cross the street in designated and protected crosswalk areas. * Walk your bike once you get onto the school property. * Remember to bring your bike lock to protect your property.
* Show respect and listen to our patrols and crossing guards. They are there to help you!
Spring Weather
To review the terminology with you, the difference between a Tornado Watch and a Tornado Warning is as follows:
Tornado Watch simply means the conditions are right for a tornado. Residents should be on the lookout for them. You DO NOT have to take shelter during a watch. During a watch, your children will be sent home at the end of the school day. All school and outside groups, i.e. Brownies, park district, will be canceled. Please be sure to make alternative arrangements for your child with friends or
neighbors in the event you are not home when your child arrives. Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted and you MUST take shelter as quickly as possible.
TBD
Cell Phone Restrictions
Our crossing guards, arrival and dismissal supervisors have noticed an increase in the number of parents who are talking or texting on their cell phones while dropping off and/or picking up their children before and after school.
Please be advised that according to Illinois State Law, when approaching a marked school crossing zone between 7 am and 4 pm, on days when schools in operation and when school children are present, a driver must stop all wireless phone communications, reduce his/her speed to 20 mph and yield to any children or adults crossing in the crosswalk area.
The 2010 law aims to increase student safety and reduce accidents caused by distracted drivers.
We appreciate your cooperation and diligence in this regard. Thank you.
TBD
Pets On the School Grounds
We want to make our parents aware that there is a McHenry County Animal control ordinance that prohibits pets, even if they are a leash, from being on school property.
Section 5.13 reads, "It shall be unlawful for any dog, cat, or other animal even though on a leash, to be present at or upon any school premises, public playground park, public beach, or public swimming pool, unless permission is granted by the agency which has jurisdiction over same. The provisions of his Section shall not apply to working support dogs."
