clock1.gifAdditional Early Release Days Approved for the 2011-2012 School Year- Facts and Schedule

Purpose

During this past April's Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the implementation of five early release days for the 2011-2012 school year for the purposes of engaging District 47 teachers in structured and targeted staff development from which we hope to improve student learning outcomes.  While the concept of staff release time being utilized in this capacity is new to District 47, it is a relatively common practice in many neighboring school districts including our local area high school district.

HPTO News to Know

2012-2013 Kindergarten Registration

boy-1.jpgParents may register their future Husmann kindergarten students at Husmann Elementary School until the end of January.  Beginning February 1 registration takes place at the District Administration Center.

To be eligible to attend kindergarten during the 2012-2013 school year, a child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2012.  State law does not require a child to attend school until he/she is seven years of age.  State law requires an original or certified copy of the birth certificate at the time of registration, your child will not be registered without one.  Hospital certificates are not acceptable.

All incoming kindergarten students will also need PROOF OF RESIDENCY.  IF you are a homeowner, a signed contract with buyer/seller names and an address, a current tax bill or copy of your mortgage agreement would serve as proof of residency.  If you are renting a home or an apartment in Crystal Lake, you must bring in a signed lease.  Both the renter and the landlord must sign the lease and state the rental address.  If you don't have this information, your will not be able to register your child for kindergarten

District 47 is required by law to exclude your child from attending school if you do not have a physical exam and immunization form before school starts.

Do You Have Questions About Your Preschooler?

District 47 offers free screening services for children 3-5 years of age as a means to assist parents in sorting concerns or questions they may have regarding their child’s development.   A screening is not a comprehensive or in-depth evaluation.  It may assist in ruling out certain concerns or providing direction for further investigation.  If any areas are identified as a concern, parents will be offered ideas, suggestions, and/or recommendations including possible further evaluation.  If an evaluation suggests a child may be in need of formal developmental support, a variety of services are provided through District 47’s Early Childhood Special Education program, including speech-language therapy, motor services  and preschool developmental classrooms.

If you have concerns regarding your preschooler’s development, please call 815-477-6968 to begin the screening process.  You will be sent a packet of information to fill out and return in order to gather initial information about your child’s development.

TIPS FOR READING WITH YOUR CHILD

books.jpg
If You Give A Child a Book..... by Pamela J. Ferris

If you give a child a book, she is going to want to read it.
And as she reads, she's going to think about what she is reading.
And as she thinks, she is going to recall what she already knows and similar experiences she has had.
And as she thinks about those experiences, she is going to want to write.
And as she writes, she is going to want to talk to her friends and share her thoughts and ideas with them.
And as she talks with others, she is going to want to learn and discover more.
So, chances are she will find another book to read,
And then another.
And another.
And as she reads more books, she will discover books that make her smile, laugh,
cry, angry, curious, frustrated, contented, thoughtful, happy.
And then, as time passes,
she will become a lifelong reader.
