Kindergarten registration for the year 2012-2013 took place at Coventry on January 9th. If you were unable to register on that date, you can do so at the District 47 Administration Center. To be eligible to attend kindergarten during the 2012-2013 school year, a child must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2012. State law does not require a child to attend school until he/she is seven years of age. All incoming kindergarten students will also need PROOF OF RESIDENCY. IF you are a homeowner, a signed contract with buyer/seller names and an address, a current tax bill or copy of your mortgage agreement would serve as proof of residency. Reading Extras
Reading With Your Child Leads to School Success Fewer families than ever before are setting aside a time for reading with their children on a daily basis. But reading with your child regularly is the single most important way to impact his school success. Even 20 minutes a day makes a difference! Here’s why:
• Every school subject involves reading. Your child has to read in English, science, history—and yes, even math! Being able to read well—and read many different kinds of material—will definitely make the difference between learning about a subject and understanding it well.
• Reading affects test success. Your child has to read and comprehend to study for a test. And he also has to be able to read and understand the directions just to take the test! Filling out an answersuccesssheet incorrectly—or failing to show his work when it’s required—could be the difference between passing and failing.
• What your child reads now will help him later. Children who read (and are read to) are often exposed to more words, which gives them larger vocabularies. If your child plans to go to college, he’ll have to take the SAT or ACT—and both have an entire section devoted to reading and vocabulary!
Health E-Tips
Brought to you by Coventry P.E. Nutrition Tips Follow the Leader. When eating out, order your meal first and make it a healthy choice. Chances are good your dining companions will follow your lead. Nonmeat Proteins. Replace one daily serving of red meat with nuts, whole grains or a low-fat dairy product. A recent study found that this simple change could reduce your risk for diabetes by 16% to 35%. Red meat is high in "heme" iron, which can contribute to diabetes. Processed meat has a high sodium content and contains chemical preservatives, such as nitrates, that can damage insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. So, limit unprocessed red meat to two or three (4 oz.) servings a week and keep processed meat choices to just one (4 oz.) serving a week. Side Outs. Get in the habit of skipping the fries and onion rings and ordering a side salad, cottage cheese or steamed vegetables when eating out.Click here to read full article
Attention D47 Parents - New Procedure
In order to promote and foster healthier student choices and to be mindful of the many students in District 47 with severe food allergies, we respectfully request that parents provide only non-food items when celebrating birthdays (book donations, pencils, sticker, etc.). Additionally, parents are strongly encouraged to provide healthy food choices for classroom celebrations and holiday parties. This request will be fully enforced as of January 4, 2012. If parents send food items to school for birthdays after this date, we will not be able to serve the items to the students and will ask parents to pick the food items up. Thank you for your cooperation.
